New guide profile enables double retractable screen systems

New guide profile enables double retractable screen systems

More and more growers are choosing multiple screen layers in their greenhouses. Extra screens help save energy and create a better growing climate. To make this possible, smart innovations are essential. At SchermNed, we’ve taken the next step: a specially developed guide profile that allows two retractable screens to operate independently on the same wire bed.

First application at Ammerlaan The Green Innovator

This system has been applied for the first time in practice at Ammerlaan The Green Innovator in Pijnacker. In the new greenhouse, we installed three screens, two of which operate on the same wire bed. For this project, SchermNed and Van der Valk Horti Systems jointly developed a unique profile: the ValkScreenProfile VSV intermediate profile. Normally, one screen is retracted using a standard guide profile. Thanks to this new intermediate profile, a second screen can now be retracted at the same level, without the two screens interfering with each other. This means both screens can operate completely independently offering growers more flexibility and greater control over the greenhouse climate.

Responding to energy-saving needs

This innovation fits perfectly with today’s trend toward multiple screen layers for improved energy efficiency and optimal shading. By controlling screens separately, growers can achieve a more precise balance between light, heat, and humidity all crucial for sustainable cultivation. The new profile was first introduced at GreenTech Amsterdam, but Ammerlaan The Green Innovator is the first to implement it in practice. The grower is currently building a new greenhouse that will bring together all cultivation of Kentia palms, which are currently spread across two sites.

“It’s great that we were able to implement this technology directly in practice,” says Jack van der Voort of SchermNed. “It shows that innovation isn’t just theory — it genuinely provides growers with tangible benefits in their daily operations.”
