Vitarom protects its crops with insectnetting filtersystem

Vitarom Neurath is a leading vegetable production company in Germany, fully focused on sustainable and innovative cultivation methods. With a growing area of 160,000 m², they produce high-quality tomatoes and mini cucumbers. Vitarom's mission is to work more sustainably at every level, thereby contributing positively to both the environment and food safety. By continuously investing in new technologies and sustainable solutions, they remain at the forefront of modern greenhouse horticulture.

  • Cultivation: tomatoes and mini cucumbers
  • Location: Germany
  • Installation type: insectnetting filtersystem

Why choose the SchermNed insect screen filtersystem?

A key part of Vitarom’s sustainability strategy is the use of beneficial insects as natural crop protectors. As Vitarom puts it:
“We’ve hired millions of tiny, helpful workers who enjoy their jobs so much that we can’t even get them to leave our greenhouses. And we don’t want them to — these beneficial insects are arachnids or bugs that love eating plant-damaging insects. As harsh as that may sound, it’s natural. And effective!”

To keep these natural protectors inside the greenhouse while blocking harmful insects from entering, Vitarom opted for our insect screen filter system installed in the ventilation windows. This system contributes directly to more sustainable cultivation by significantly reducing the need for chemical crop protection products. Fewer pesticides mean a healthier growing environment and potentially higher yields due to reduced crop damage and lower input costs.

From trade fair to realization

The first contact with Vitarom was made at the horticultural trade fair in Gorinchem, where we had a meaningful and inspiring conversation with one of the owners. This led to an in-depth presentation and a visit to another company that had already implemented our filter system. After a detailed comparison of various insect screen solutions by Looije Agro Technics BV, the decision was made in favor of our system — a wonderful compliment and a strong endorsement of the quality we provide.

The installation process did present some challenges. In January, work could only be carried out between 09:00 and 16:00, as the screen installation had to remain closed outside of those hours to maintain the greenhouse climate. Despite the limited working hours, our technicians completed the project within three weeks. This was made possible through tight scheduling, excellent teamwork, and the flexibility of both our staff and Vitarom.

With the successful installation of our insect screen filter system at Vitarom Neurath, we’ve made a meaningful contribution to their sustainable cultivation strategy. By equipping the greenhouse with an effective barrier against harmful insects while retaining natural protectors inside, not only is crop quality improved, but the use of chemical agents is drastically reduced. This project is a great example of how innovative screen technology can support more sustainable and efficient greenhouse cultivation.
