Holstein Flowers protects their gerberas with insect netting filter
Holstein Flowers from De Lier, like SchermNed, is a close-knit family company that has been growing gerberas since 1974. They are now one of the largest gerbera growers in the world with two locations of almost 11 hectares combined. Holstein Flowers chose the SchermNed insect mesh filter system to protect their gerbera cultivation in an environmentally friendly way.
- Cultivation: Gerbera’s
- Location: De Lier (Holland)

Why the SchermNed insect mesh filter system?
As the use of chemical pesticides is decreasing, Hans van Holstein was looking for another way to keep unwanted insects out. Hans explains why they chose the insect mesh filter at Holstein Flowers: 'We are particularly bothered by moths that lay eggs. The caterpillars that hatch from them cause holes in the leaves. We want to keep those moths out anyway.'.
So why they didn't choose the harmonica mesh, Hans further explains: ‘The insect netting filter hangs inwards, making it less humid because of the weather than the harmonica netting.’ He expects that this keeps the mesh cleaner and is better for climate maintenance in the greenhouse.

Holstein Flowers lends a hand
In the quiet period between crops, Holstein Flowers can use their own technical people for part of the installation of the insect netting. Of the more than 2,400 vents in which the insect netting is installed, 800 are done by their people.
After a clear explanation, proper guidance and supervision from project leader Gerard van den Bos, they were able to get to work and the installation of the insect mesh filter system went very smoothly.
