Custom sun shading at the main entrance of UMC Utrecht

Custom sun shading at the main entrance of UMC Utrecht

Recently, we completed a special project commissioned by UMC Utrecht: the installation of a shading system at the main entrance.

This is a location where visitors and staff pass through daily, and where sunlight previously caused significant inconvenience. In particular, the employees at the registration desk and the hosts and hostesses in the entrance area experienced difficulties performing their tasks during moments of intense sunlight. An earlier investment in a shade cloth proved insufficient to solve the problem.

Together with UMC Utrecht, a screen fabric was selected as the preferred solution. For this, we developed a floating system that seamlessly integrates with the existing structure. Thanks to this tailor-made approach, no modifications to the building were required. The colour of the fabric was also carefully matched to the previously installed shade cloth, ensuring a calm and uniform appearance.

Because the hospital needed to remain accessible throughout the installation, our focus was on safety and minimising disruption. Our team worked behind professional barriers and took visitor flows into account. On the first day of installation, our planner was present on-site to inform staff and ensure smooth coordination of the work. To guarantee the system would operate correctly, a 3D design was created in advance. This allowed us to simulate the system’s functionality and rule out any potential issues before installation began.
