Second Energy Screen Installed Across 9 Hectares of Greenhouses in Japan

Second Energy Screen Installed Across 9 Hectares of Greenhouses in Japan

Commissioned by Van der Hoeven Horticultural Projects, we carried out the delivery and installation of a second screen system in five existing greenhouse compartments in Japan. Back in 2018, we installed the initial screen system for this newly built project, and this time we were asked to equip two of the three greenhouses with an additional energy screen.

Installation Above Existing Crops

The new system was installed using the latest VSV 2.0 system from van der Valk, in which the energy-saving screen is retracted with a spline into dedicated chambers along the truss and moving profile. This retraction method is less time-consuming and reduces the risk of crop damage and installer exposure. The result is an efficient solution for optimal climate control and energy reduction. Installation took place above a growing crop, while harvesting and crop-related activities continued simultaneously. This required tight coordination, precise execution, and maximum safety. Thanks to daily on-site consultations and clear communication with the client, we ensured consistent project progress.

Technical Specifications:

  • Second screen system in 5 greenhouse compartments.
  • Energy-saving screen with spline-guided retraction.
  • VSV 2.0 Valk system (no screen clips, faster retraction, less work at height, less contamination during retraction).

Efficient and On Schedule

Despite the challenging circumstances — including long-distance coordination, time zone differences, and high greenhouse temperatures — the project was delivered on schedule within seven weeks. Our team of seven technicians held daily on-site meetings with the client to ensure clear planning and smooth execution. Our site manager, Marc van der Knaap, also traveled to Japan to personally assess the installation. During his visit, he met with the client and our team to discuss progress and operational matters in detail. Site visits like these are essential to identify potential challenges early and maintain the high quality of our services. Our longstanding partnership with Van der Hoeven Horticultural Projects is built on mutual trust, in-depth horticultural expertise, and a shared goal of realizing innovative greenhouse solutions worldwide. This project is another great example of how good cooperation leads to smooth execution. We are proud of this collaboration, where quality and reliability are always central.

The Result

The second screen system provides immediate energy savings and enables more stable climate management. Thanks to the installation above the crop, no additional investment in crop relocation or production downtime was required. The result: an efficient upgrade with minimal disruption to daily operations.
