Installation of windbreak- and Insect netting at Vlaming Zaadteelt

Installation of windbreak- and Insect netting at Vlaming Zaadteelt

A custom-made solution for full insect protection without compromising ventilation or climate. For this project, a total of eight greenhouse sections were equipped with insect netting. The installation consists of four sections fitted with our own insect netting filter system and four sections with fixed netting. It quickly became clear that this would be a project full of interesting technical challenges.

  • Cultivation: Seeds
  • Location: Nibbixwoud
  • Installation type: Windbreak- and insect netting
  • Number of vents: +/- 655

Custom solutions due to limited space

The greenhouse construction includes several areas with limited installation space, making this project largely dependent on custom solutions. When measuring insect netting, absolute accuracy is essential: every dimension of the vent opening must be correct down to the millimeter. Even the smallest gap can allow insects to enter precisely what this system is designed to prevent.

Technical challenges in the roof vents

During the preparation phase, it became apparent that the rack-and-pinion mechanisms run directly through the vent openings, exactly where the push rods of the filter system would normally be installed. As a result, it was not possible to apply our insect netting filter system in these specific roof vents. To ensure complete closure of all vents, fixed netting combined with draught brushes was chosen in these areas. The selected mesh size is approximately 0.97 × 0.97 mm

Focus on climate stability

The client opted for insect netting primarily due to nuisance caused by birds. The decisive reason for choosing the filter system, however, was the need to maintain a stable greenhouse climate. The temperature inside the greenhouse was not allowed to increase, while sufficient ventilation remained essential. By combining windbreak netting, our insect netting filter system and fixed netting, a solution was achieved that preserves air circulation without compromising protection.
