Insect netting: Klondike Gardens fights Turkish Moth

Insect netting: Klondike Gardens fights Turkish Moth

In Berkel en Rodenrijs earlier this year, SchermNed screen installations and insect netting was able to realize a beautiful insect netting project for Klondike Gardens. They are part of growers' association Summit Gerbera. Klondike Gardens is known for growing their very high quality Gerberas in an environmentally friendly way.

  • Cultivation: Gerbera’s
  • Location: Berkel en Rodenrijs
  • Installation type: SchermNed insect netting filter
  • Number of vents: +/- 1700 ventilation windows

To protect their crops in an affordable and environmentally friendly way from unwanted outside insects, including the Turkish moth, Klondike Gardens has chosen the SchermNed insect mesh filter system. This has proved successful to date, as the Turkish moth is still kept out!

Ruud van Leeuwen of Klondike Gardens says, “The primary goal was to keep the Turkish moth out. This has been 100 percent successful so far! We have not had to carry out any sprays against the Turkish moth since the mesh was installed, because they are simply not there anymore."

Quick and safe installation

The installation in the more than 1,700 vents went very quickly, and within a month all vents were equipped with the necessary insect netting. The insect netting was installed in existing cultivation and thanks in part to the SchermNed custom made 'over crop' carts, the systems could be assembled so quickly. As the name suggests, the mechanics can easily maneuver themselves over the crop to reach the windows. All in a pleasant and safe way.

Acting quickly, even in the face of setbacks

Some challenges were encountered during the project when glass breakage damage was discovered after installation. This damage was the result of a special situation surrounding the profiling of the A- Ridge security in combination with the mounting profiles. Despite the quality and test phases, which SchermNed carries out with every project prior to production, this only came to light later.

Thanks to the rapid response, a repair team was ready to start work that very same day. It could be handled well due to the smooth cooperation and communication by the parties involved. Project manager Peter van der Lingen explains, “At SchermNed we never run away from problems and we demonstrate our ability to act quickly and effectively in unforeseen situations.” Ruud from Klondike Gardens looks back on the project, “The assembly went fine and what happened is annoying for both parties, but we handled it well and dealt with each other nicely.”.
