Insect netting: Klondike Gardens fight Turkish Moth

Crop:                                    Gerberas

Location:                            Berkel en Rodenrijs

Installation:                      SchermNed insect netting filter

Windows:                           +/- 1700 ventilation windows

In Berkel en Rodenrijs, earlier this year, SchermNed had the opportunity to carry out a beautiful insect netting project for Klondike Gardens. They are part of the Summit Gerbera growers' association. Klondike Gardens is known for cultivating their Gerberas, of very high quality, in an environmentally friendly manner.

To protect their cultivation in an affordable and environmentally friendly way against unwanted external insects, including the Turkish moth, Klondike Gardens opted for the SchermNed insect netting filter. The result has been successful so far, as the Turkish moth has been effectively kept out!

Ruud van Leeuwen of Klondike Gardens says: "The primary goal was to keep the Turkish moth out. So far, this has been achieved 100%! Since the installation of the insect netting, we have not had to carry out any sprays against the Turkish moth because they simply aren't there anymore."

Fast and secure installation

The installation in the more than 1700 ventilation windows proceeded very quickly, and within a month, all windows were fitted with the necessary insect filter. The insect netting filter was installed in existing cultivation, and thanks to SchermNed's custom-made 'overcrop' carts, the systems could be assembled quickly. As the name suggests, with these carts, the installers can easily maneuver over the crop to reach the windows. And all done in a pleasant and safe manner.

Quick action, even when there's a set back

During the project they experienced some challenges  when glass breakage damage was discovered after installation. This damage was due to a special situation regarding the profiling of the A-ridge protection in combination with the profiles. Despite the quality and testing phases that SchermNed conducts for each project prior to production, this issue only came to light later.

Thanks to quick action, a repair team was ready to start working the same day. It was handled well due to the smooth cooperation and communication among the parties involved. Project supervisor Peter van der Lingen explains: "At SchermNed, we never shy away from problems and demonstrate our ability to act quickly and effectively in unforeseen circumstances." Ruud from Klondike Gardens reflects on the project: "The installation went well, and what happened was unfortunate for both parties, but we handled it well and resolved it properly together."
