The KMSKA has undergone a radical transformation in recent years. It was decided that the building had to undergo a renovation in order to extend its lifespan. The museum has now reopened to the public and SchermNed was partially responsible for this. The main aim of this project was optimal operation of the light-regulating screen/sun protection cloth, with on the other hand a less obvious structure, whilst preserving details of this beautiful building.
The roof of the building, which is more than 140 years old, mainly consists of glass. Beneath the glass roof, the ceiling of every room now has a glass atrium. Installation of a double and moving screen above the glass atrium allows excellent light regulation within the rooms. This also protects the works of art housed in the building from the daylight.
18 double climate screens
In consultation with the customer, we opted for a double screen installation for the glass roofs. The system is pulled by a stainless-steel pull-wire around a drive shaft. We installed a total of 2,000 m² of cloths in 18 double climate screens, driven by 36 motors.
Fireproof Harmony cloths by Svensson
The system comprises two Harmony cloths by Ludvig Svensson. The underlying cloth is a Harmony cloth, responsible for the even distribution of shadow and light. The top layer of cloth is a white screen cloth, with a closed structure, which has reflective properties resulting in a cool indoor climate. These two cloths ensure optimum light control for the rooms beneath the atria.
